With Solink's Line Cross feature, you can create up to 5 lines within your camera view and track the total number of times a person or vehicle crosses each line. You can also adjust the event creation frequency.
You can configure various types of line directions to track:
In and Out traffic (entrances and exits, for both people and vehicles)
Left to Right traffic (passerby traffic outside the storefront)
Up and Down traffic (floor to floor transitions, such as escalators and stairways)
Note: Line Cross Events are only available with a subscription to Vision Analytics (included in the Solink AI package).
Line Cross events provide useful data to help you:
Detect illegal entries or exits.
Rank stores by conversion rate.
See fluctuations in store occupancy over time.
Record passerby traffic.
Better understand customer flow and drive-thru capacity (for vehicles) to adjust staffing levels.
How to Enable Line Cross Events
You must enable Vision Analytics on one of your cameras in order to enable Line Cross Events.
See Enable Vision Analytics for information on how to enable Line Cross Events.
Note: Additional permission is required to manage Vision Analytics on your cameras. Please reach out to our Support team if you require permission.
Note: If you have exceeded the number of available cameras with Vision Analytics, you can disable Vision Analytics on one camera and enable it on another whenever required.
How to Create Line Cross Events
To create a line:
Navigate to the camera you want to create a line for (select the Video page > select the camera to open the video player).
Select the AI button > Line Cross in the top-right corner of the video player:
Select the Search tab (you can also select the Events tab and skip this section entirely; however, it is recommended to test your line with Line Cross Search first):
Next, draw a line in the camera view where you want to generate an event whenever a person/vehicle crosses the line. Refer to Line Cross Search for an overview of how to create the line.
Select a start time and end time to capture data and test the accuracy of the line. If the line is capturing data correctly and you are happy with the line location, you can use this line to generate events.
Select Configure at the bottom of the page to configure this line to generate events. Select Keep Existing Line when prompted (do not overwrite this line unless you would like to create a new line for events):
Tip: Select the + button at the top of the video player to add another line. Select a point within the video player to begin drawing another line and repeat the steps above.
Configure the Line for Line Cross Events
To finish configuring and save your line, follow these steps:
Select the dropdown menu to choose the Line Type:
Choose from on of the following Line Types:
Entrance and Exit: Select this Line Type and draw the line near a door to track the number of people who enter and/or exit the location. This is the only Line Type that, when selected, automatically generates Location Occupancy events.
Passerby Traffic: Select this Line Type and draw the line outside of the entrance of the store (for example, outside of a strip mall) to track the number of people who either pass by the location outside or enter.
Floor Level Transition: Select this Line Type and draw near an elevator/escalator to track the number of people who transition from one floor to another.
Select the "pencil" icon to edit the line name. This will help you locate the line later on the Events page as the event name will be the same as the line name:
Select Save to create the line and begin generating events.
Line Cross Event Creation Frequency
By default, an event is created every 5 minutes or 15 crossings - whichever comes first.
To change this behaviour:
Select Advanced Settings.
Select one of the following options:
Create an event for each person who crosses the line.
Create grouped events every 5 minutes or after 15 crossings, whichever comes first.
Bounce Rate
You can measure "Bounce Rate" to see how often a person or vehicle enters, then exits a location/area within a short period of time.
You can customize the amount of time that determines a bounce, but typical scenarios include:
A person enters a location (crosses the line); then within a few seconds, the same person exits the location (crosses the line in the opposite direction). This counts as one bounce.
A vehicle approaches an oil change bay door; the vehicle waits for 30 seconds, then drives away. This counts as one bounce.
Note: Bounce rates are captured only when a person remains in view of the same camera when entering and exiting; if a person enters and proceeds to another area of the store, then exits without buying anything, the AI will not create a bounce event.
To enable Bounce tracking and configure the bounce threshold time:
Ensure the Line Type is Entrance & Exit. Bounce cannot be configured on other line types.
Select the Advanced Settings dropdown menu.
Toggle Bounce to "on".
Set the Time Threshold field to determine the maximum amount of time, in seconds, that someone or a vehicle must cross the line and then cross it again in the opposite direction. A bounce event will be created whenever this threshold is met:
To locate bounce events, use the event page filters specified in the section below.
Note: When Bounce is enabled, it is highly recommended to select the "Create an event for each person who crosses the line" option for Event Creation Frequency. This ensures a bounce event is created each time a bounce occurs.
Where to Locate Line Cross Events
You can locate all Line Cross events (including Store Occupancy count events) via the Events page > AI tab > Line Cross filter:
Additionally, you can further enhance your search for Line Cross events via the following Line Cross event filters (select Add Filter > AI category):
Line Cross Event Type: passerby, floor, entrance/exit (store occupancy)
Line Label: Name given to the line during line cross configuration.
Line Cross In: Number of people who crossed to the "In" side of the line.
Line Cross Out: Number of people who crossed to the "Out" side of the line.
Line Cross Left: Number of people who crossed to the "Left" side of the line.
Line Cross Right: Number of people who crossed to the "Right" side of the line.
Line Cross Bounce Threshold: Locate bounce events with a specific bounce threshold (in seconds).
Line Cross Total Bounces: Locate bounce events based on the number of bounces recorded in the event.
Line Cross events contain the following information:
Line label: The name of the line (configured when creating the line)
In/Out: The number of people/vehicles that crossed the line in either direction (in/out).
The data captured in your Line Cross events allow you to create widgets on the Dashboard page.
Location Occupancy Events
Location Occupancy events are generated every 15 minutes and provide you with up-to-date, accurate store occupancy numbers:
Location Occupancy events are only generated if you select the Entrance and Exit Line Type.
These events display the total number of people who crossed to both the In and Out sides of the line in the given 15 minute interval, providing you with context for the Current Occupancy.
Line Cross Events: Recommended Widgets
You can create the following widgets to measure important data points with Line Cross Events.
Draw Rate Widget
Measuring draw rate can you help you compare the rate at which people entered the store to the rate at which people passed by the entrance of the store but did not enter.
The calculation for the data in this widget is: Line Cross In (total number of people who entered) divided by Passerby Traffic x 100%.
Reach out to your Customer Success representative if you require assistance configuring this widget.
Bounce Rate Widget
Measuring Bounce Rate can help you track the rate at which people enter a store and then leave within a short period of time, or when vehicles drive to a certain area of the location for service but leave before getting the service.
Keeping a close eye on Bounce Rate can help you measure how effective your store layout is (if people are interested in remaining in the store), or how effective your vehicle service (if it takes too long, people will drive away).
The calculation for the data in this widget is: Line Cross Total Bounces divided by Line Cross In x 100%.
